Internet access can matter to a property's practical use, but survey estimates should not be presented as an address-level service guarantee. The source design determines what the number can support.

Build a source log

Use the Census ACS data profiles or API documentation. Record the table or profile, survey year, geography, variable, universe, estimate, margin of error, and access date. Preserve the exact wording rather than shortening “has a broadband internet subscription” into “has internet.”

Contract application

If a contract contains a technology, use, or disclosure representation, compare it with address-level evidence. ACS data can describe neighborhood or area context. It cannot confirm that a particular parcel has service, a specific speed, or a functioning connection.

Method and limitation

This article uses Census ACS documentation reviewed August 11, 2026. ACS estimates have survey uncertainty and do not establish property condition, service availability, ownership, or contract compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Does ACS describe one home?

No. It describes a defined survey universe and geography.

Why preserve the table ID?

It makes the variables and definitions reproducible.

Can ACS confirm service?

No. Use address-specific evidence for that question.
