Research question
How should an estate researcher handle a tail number, aircraft purchase agreement, insurance record, hangar invoice, or maintenance file? Federal Aviation Administration registry resources can help identify registration records and direct formal record requests. They do not by themselves establish probate ownership, value, lien status, or authority to transfer.
Authoritative starting points
The FAA Aircraft Registration Branch provides aircraft inquiry resources and explains how to request aircraft records. The inquiry tools support searches using aircraft or registration information made available by the registry. Formal files may contain registration and airworthiness-related documents within the FAA’s record scope.
Identifier-first workflow
Start with the registration number, manufacturer, model, serial number, and names exactly as shown in the estate source. Preserve a copy of that source and record why the aircraft may relate to the matter. Search by the strongest identifier and capture the retrieval date, displayed registration status, registrant name and address, aircraft identifiers, and record source.
Then compare the results with bills of sale, entity records, insurance, maintenance, hangar, financing, and tax documents. A matching name is not enough when names are common, and a matching address may be historical. If an entity is the registrant, document the separate evidence connecting that entity to the estate.
Timeline and discrepancy log
Build events for acquisition documents, registration applications, certificates, address changes, security instruments found in the supplied record, insurance periods, and any reported sale. Preserve effective and filing dates separately. A registration database update date should not be restated as the date ownership changed.
| Finding | Follow-up evidence |
|---|---|
| Matching registration number | Serial number and underlying acquisition record |
| Registrant is an entity | Entity ownership and authority documents |
| Status or address differs from estate file | Dated registry record and later correspondence |
| Aircraft file references another party | Complete instrument and professional review |
Limitations
Registration evidence is not a market valuation or a complete determination of title and encumbrances. The operational location may differ from the registered address. Aircraft can involve state tax, entity, insurance, maintenance, export, and secured-transaction records outside a simple registry result.
Report searches and source records, not conclusions beyond them. Route transfer, title, lien, tax, airworthiness, and probate questions to professionals familiar with the relevant record systems.
