The Federal Judicial Caseload Statistics report is a useful map of court workload. It is not a property index. A national total can help a team explain why bankruptcy or federal litigation checks may appear in an investigative workflow, but only a docket and its filed documents can support a matter-specific finding.

Three levels of evidence

1. Aggregate statistics show the size and direction of a court population. 2. A docket identifies a case, court, parties, and procedural history. 3. Filed records and orders support a specific factual or authority question.

Confusing these levels is a common source of overstatement. The U.S. Courts 2025 caseload report provides the first level only.

Search-note fields

Record the jurisdiction searched, name variants, date range, case number, match rationale, documents opened, and unresolved identity questions. A “no result” statement should identify the system and date searched; it should not imply that no proceeding exists anywhere.
